Top Ten Attacks on Christianity in 2008

A non-profit group exists called the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission .  The group is about 10 years old, but they hadn’t come onto my radar screen until this list that they recently released announcing, 2008’s Top Ten Instances of Christian Bashing in America.  Says the CEO: “It is time for the Christian bashing to stop and for Christians to no longer be treated like second-class citizens,” said Dr. Gary Cass, Chairman and CEO of CADC. “Anti-Christian bigotry is real and growing. Those who engage in it should be exposed and called to account.”

Christians are second-class citizens?  Politicially, I know that the rush to victimhood is inherent in almost any advocacy strategy.  If you want to get something, from either the public or government, you must make it seem like you are denied something that everyone else has.  The tricky part is determing who really is oppressed and who is not.

Anyway, to the Top 10 list, some selected examples…

INSTANCE #10: Jack Black Musical Video

*I think we all saw this one.  However, it is much tamer than anything that would appear in episodes of, say Family Guy or South Park.  It is true, though, that it is perfectly OK to depict Christ in any imaginable way, but public outcry ensues with other religious figures.  I haven’t yet heard a good explanation for why.

INSTANCE #6: Religulous the Movie

*Have yet to see it.  Has anyone?  I know that Maher is particularly hostile about his disdain for religion.

INSTANCE #4: Colorado Law Criminalizes the Bible

*This one caught my attention; that’s a pretty serious charge.  The caption below it reads…

SB200, a Colorado state bill recently signed into law, criminalizes the Bible. Section 8 of the bill entitled “Publishing of discriminative matter forbidden” makes publishing the Bible illegal because it contains anti-homosexual passages. This is part of a larger effort to criminalize the expression of certain opinions and beliefs.

I was able to follow the links provided by the CADC to learn more about this legislation.  I mean, criminalizing the Bible?  I can’t believe I hadn’t heard more about this happening in Colorado.  It would seem to be front-page news.  Luckily, I soon discovered what was actually going on here.  What CADC was referring to was Colorado’s expansion of its  the Anti-Discrimination law to cover sexual orientation.  What that means is that people can longer be fired simply for being gay or kicked out of their apartment for being get, etc.  For the record, churches are expempt from the law, of course.  They can always deny membership to anyone for any reason.  What seems to have most riled up the CADC are the provisions for transgendered indivduals use of public bathrooms.  James Dobson explains…

“Henceforth, every woman and little girl will have to fear that a predator, bisexual, cross-dresser or even a homosexual or heterosexual male might walk in and relieve himself in their presence,” Dobson said.

Oh, James, James, James.  I will treasure the day when you finally realize that the word ‘gay’ no longer must be immediately connected to ‘predator.” I’m not necessarily a strong supporter of anti-discrimination laws, because I can’t get past the fact that I don’t want the government “forcing” private individuals into accepting me.  However, if this law is the 4th worst ‘attack’ on Christianity of the year, than I’d suggest that Christitinaity is doing just fine.

INSTANCE #3: Barack Obama Defames Christianity

According to research into President Elect Obama’s own statements about faith, and an examination of Obama’s position on moral issues, CADC has determined that by any biblical and historic Christian standard, Barack Obama is not a Christian, although he claims he is a “devout Christian.”

*This one is just comical.  I love the official tone of it.  They ‘researched’ and ‘determined’ that Obama is not a Christian.  Whew, I’m glad we have them on the case to unequivocally clarify these things for us.  They should write a book, so the rest of us can have the sam sleuthing skills to figure out who really is or is not a Christian.  Maybe a 20-Questions format.  Kind of like those “Name that Tree” books that asks you questions about the leafs of a tree until you’ve determined exactly what tree it must come from.

And the last two do not even need a response.

INSTANCE #2: Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin Is Attacked

INSTANCE #1: Radical Homosexuals Assault Prop 8 Marriage Supporters in California

*  It all goes back to this:  Poor Sarah Palin.  Evil Gays.
